Summer Recreation Program Announced

Summer Recreation Program will be held 7/8/24-7/26/24 from 9am-Noon

History of the Recreation Program

The recreation program was first officially run (Organized) in 1947 by Coach Bill Hoeppel. In 1948 the program was sponsored by the Men’s Club. There is little information or documentation on its early years.  Later on the program was picked up and sponsored as a combined effort with the Town of Hastings and The Village of Central Square working together.

However, one event which is well documented was the second annual Pet Show held July 22, 1949. The Central Square recreation commission had a good turnout of children and pets at the second annual pet show, held in the auditorium of the high school. Prizes were awarded to the boys and girls plus special awards. Steve Glenn took first place with a 69 year old parrot, William Glenn second place with his turtle and Millard “Mudd” Murphy took third with his duck (Quack Quack). For the girls, Dorothy Goldsmith took first with a beagle dog, Patty Kimberly second with a toy bull and third to Mary McMahon and Susy Newman for their baby chicks.

Special awards went to the following pets and owners; Smartest Linda Dunham’s Water Spaniel, Largest was William Hegarty’s Chow, Smallest to Mary Coville’s mud turtle, Prettiest to Betty Frank’s cat and Dumbest to Priscilla Hoeppel’s Cocker Spaniel.

Director:  Rebekah McGraw
