The Village of Central Square and the Town of Hastings proudly announce our 2024 Summer Recreation Program, scheduled for July 8th to 26th on weekdays from 9 am to noon daily.
Rebekah McGraw will be returning as the program director for the fourth consecutive year, eager to expand the program's offerings. Campers can look forward to engaging in various crafts, games, and community events and presentations throughout the program. Participation in the program is free of charge.

Recreation Program History
The Central Square recreation program traces its roots back to 1947, believed to be its inaugural year under the direction of Bill Hoeppel. The following year, in 1948, the Men’s Club took charge of running the program. Unfortunately, there is limited information or documentation available regarding its early years.
However, one memorable event that stands out is the second annual Pet Show held on July 22, 1949. Hosted by the Central Square Recreation Commission, this event attracted a great turnout of children and their beloved pets to the auditorium of the high school. Prizes were awarded to the participants, with special recognition given to notable pets and their owners.
Notable winners included Steve Glenn, whose 69-year-old parrot took first place, and William Glenn, whose turtle secured second place. Millard Murphy's duck, affectionately known as "Quack Quack," earned third place honors. Among the girls, Dorothy Goldsmith's beagle dog claimed first prize, followed by Patty Kimberly's toy bull and Mary McMahon and Susy Newman's baby chicks in second and third place, respectively.
Special awards were also presented, including the Smartest award to Linda Dunham's Water Spaniel, Largest to William Hegarty's Chow, Smallest to Mary Coville's mud turtle, Prettiest to Betty Frank's cat, and Dumbest to Priscilla Hoeppel's Cocker Spaniel.
Though the early years of the recreation program remain shrouded in mystery, events like the Pet Show serve as cherished reminders of its rich history and the community spirit it continues to foster.
